Remotely reboot Windows Server 2003
Remotely reboot Windows Server 2003
I know I know its a SharePoint Blog. But I faced this problem in my server farm and thought of posting it so that it helps somebody else too...
So this is what happened:- I came to office and logged on to my Remote Desktop Console to take a look in my MOSS Farm Event Viewers (something I started doing in MOSS Beta 1 days and now I am addicted :-)). What I found was a Event ID 10039 from Office Server Search:
"Retry of query machine 'WFE2' has failed with error: The network path was not found. 0x80070035. It will be retried again in 60 seconds. Component: 5cfead2d-124a-4532-ab47-7b1bfd618059"
-- Tried logging in to WFE 2 (2nd Web Front End Server) with the Farm Admin Account (local admin on the WFE)
-- Access Denied !!
Thought of remotely rebooting the server (I don't want to troubleshoot such weird error and moreover to see the logs first I have to log in!!)
-- a technet article came handy (meant for XP Pro but worked perfect with Windows Server 2003 Ent x64).. check it out.

To perform a remote shutdown
1. Open Computer Management (Local)
2. In the console tree, right-click Computer Management (Local), and then click Connect to another computer.
3. In the Select Computer dialog box, click Another computer, type the name of the computer that you want to restart or shut down, and then click OK. You can also click Browse to search for the name of the computer.
4. In the console tree, right-click Computer Management (Remote computer name), and then click Properties.
5. On the Advanced tab, click Startup and Recovery.
6. Click Shut Down to open the Shut Down dialog box.
7. Under Action, select the actions you want to perform on the computer to which you are connected.
8. Under Force Apps Closed, select the circumstances under which you want to force applications to close when you shut down or restart the computer, and then click OK.

• To open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
• You must be recognized as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group on your computer and on the computer you are managing to perform this task.

Thing that should or should not be done to SharePoint admin account
Thing that should or should not be done to SharePoint admin account
Here is a short list of most common scenarios that people should be aware of regarding SP admin account on AD:
1. When the account initially is created, set "Password never expires" account property to true. This is not a regular user account hence it should comply with service account settings rules. If the password changes, reset passwords to reflect the new password in the Application pool identity.
2. If you are not happy with you "spappadmin" or "spadmin" (fill in the blanks) farm admin account name, DO NOT DELETE IT AND CREATE NEW ONE with the desired name. just rename this account in AD, this will make sure that the SID remains the same and the security settings do not have to be recreated for this account EVERYWHERE.
this applies to any other account in AD, but admins do know it.
3. if your farm admin account without password change suddenly looses connection to the DB and in the log you see account "[blank]" could not be authenticated to the SQL. most likely your account got corrupted in AD.
Another scenario, Farm is still functioning fine, but when you try to connect to the SQL remotely using farm admin account connection fails.
You will still be able to access you farm since the trusted connection had been established before the AD account got corrupted, but you will not be able to establish any new connections with it.
In this case just recreate admin account in AD and go through the pain of recreating security settings or changing SIDs.

How to change service accounts and service account passwords in SharePoint Server 2007 and in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
Note If the SQL Server service uses a domain account, and the password for that domain account is either expired or invalid, make sure that you update the password for the domain account before you perform this procedure.
Update the password for the account that is used by the Central Administration application pool. To do this, follow these steps:
On all servers in the server farm, open a command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER:
cd %commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web server extensions\12\Bin
On the server that hosts the Central Administration Web site, type the following line at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
stsadm -o updatefarmcredentials -userlogin DomainName\UserName -password NewPassword
On all other servers in the server farm, type the following line at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
stsadm -o updatefarmcredentials -userlogin DomainName\UserName -password NewPassword -local
Restart Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0. To do this, type the following line at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
iisreset /noforce
Verify that the Administration Application Pool Credential Deployment job definition is no longer displayed on the Timer Job Definitions page of SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration. To do this, follow these steps:
Open SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration, click Operations, and then click Timer job definitions under Global Configuration.
Verify that the Administration Application Pool Credential Deployment job definition is no longer displayed in the list.
Note If the Administration Application Pool Credential Deployment job definition is displayed in the list, wait until it disappears from the list.
Update the password for the application pool account that is used by Web applications on the server farm. To do this, type the following line at a command prompt on every server on the server farm, and then press ENTER:

Method 1: Start the SPAdmin service
Start the SPAdmin service on all computers in the farm before you update the password. Stop the service when the operation is complete.
Method 2: Add the database access account to the local administrators group
Add the database access account to the local administrators group of each computer in the farm that has an online search instance. Log on by using that account, and then update the password by using the stsadm command.
When this operation is complete, remove the database access account from the local administrators group of each computer.
